DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1608Z July 12, 2019

SMOKE:
Alaska/Yukon Territory/British Columbia/North Central Canada...
Smoke of moderate to heavy density continues to cover most of Canada
traveling Southeast. The majority of the smoke is originating in Alaska
but due to heavy cloud cover over most of the Northern Territories and
Alaska, only a portion of the potential smoke cover could be seen in
central Canada by satellite imagery this morning. Medium density smoke
lies over most of Alaska and off of the Pacific coast, flowing into the
far northern CONUS in areas such as Washington state.

High Plains To New England...
Variable density smoke from a large amount of wildfire activity in
Alaska and Canada was visible extending from the Dakotas, along the Great
Lakes region and up into New England. A plume of heavy density smoke,
in particular, was visible over Minnesota and extending southeast into
Illinois. Light smoke continues to travel southeast over the northeastern
United States, before a moderate density plume emerges from the cloud
cover and extends into the Atlantic Ocean.

DUST:
Eastern Atlantic Ocean/Caribbean into Gulf of Mexico...
Saharan dust was visible blowing across the Atlantic Ocean into
the Caribbean region and into the Gulf of Mexico. Dust was rapidly
approaching an area around Puerto Rico and was heading towards the Gulf of
Mexico, where remnant dust was visible in early morning satellite imagery.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
