DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1900z July 19, 2019

SMOKE:
Alaska/Canada...
Numerous wildfires continue to burn across portions of Alaska and
northwestern Canada resulting in an expansive area of smoke of varying
density which covers much of Eastern Alaska. The smoke also was visible
over a good portion of the Yukon and Northwest Territories, southern
Nunavut, much of Alberta and Saskatchewan, northern Manitoba, Hudson Bay,
and a portion of Quebec and the Canadian Maritimes of southeastern Canada
before disappearing amongst the clouds as it approaches the Atlantic. The
thickest smoke in the region was seen closer to some of the wildfires
in northern Alberta.

Southern Washington/Western Idaho...
Smoke from a wildfire in Southern Washington state was producing moderate
density smoke traveling East into Idaho.

Southwestern U.S./Central U.S...
Moderately dense to locally thick smoke was seen with some of the
wildfires burning in central Arizona and southwestern Colorado. A larger
area of thinner density smoke associated with these fires and with other
smaller wildfires burning in Arizona, New Mexico, and southwestern and
southeastern Colorado was noted extending from Arizona, New Mexico, and
southern and eastern Colorado to the east and northeast over portions
of the Central Plains.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
