DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0331z July 21, 2019

SMOKE:
Most of Canada and Alaska....A large area of moderate to high density
smoke, from the ongoing fires over northern Saskatchewan, northern
Alberta and much of Alaska, extended across most of Canada and into
Alaska. The southern portion of this plume extended into portions of
the northern Rockies over northwestern Montana and northern Idaho.
Within the large plume, the highest density smoke extended from the
Northwest Territories west through the Yukon and into portions of
northeastern Alaska. Further to the south, another region of high
density smoke was over portions of northern Alberta.

Central Plains....A light area of smoke, from fires over the Southwest
US, extended from portions of eastern Nebraska west into portions of
eastern Colorado and then south into the northern Texas Panhandle.

Northern Plains....A small axis of smoke from the fires over Idaho was
extending from portions of southwestern North Dakota west into eastern
Montana.

Northern Mid Atlantic and extending offshore....An area of aerosol that
had some remnant smoke was extending from offshore the northern Mid
Atlantic towards coastal areas of New Jersey south to North Carolina.

Caribbean....An area of Saharan Dust extended through the Caribbean Sea
towards Central America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
