DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1646Z July 25, 2019

SMOKE:
Alaska/Canada/Central and Eastern United States....The widespread ongoing
fires over Alaska, Northwestern and North Central Canada continued
to produce a very large area of smoke that extended  across much of
the eastern and central United States, central and northwestern Canada
and Alaska.  The densest areas of smoke within this area were over the
upper Midwest of the United States extending north into eastern Ontario
and also over portions of northeast Alaska.  Moderate density smoke
extended from northern Saskatchewan, northern Alberta and the southern
Northwest Territories.

DUST:
Caribbean and Central America....An area of Saharan Dust was moving
towards the eastern Caribbean Islands.  Further to the west, another
area of Saharan Dust was in the western Caribbean moving into portions
of Central America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
