DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z July 31, 2019
SMOKE: Alaska/Canada/Eastern U.S/North Atlantic/Greenland... Remnant smoke associated with long-range transport from Russian wildfires could be seen stretching across Alaska and Canada. A few larger wildfires were observed emitting moderate smoke across the northern portions of the Northwest Territories and Alaska. Light density smoke covers most of Canada with the exception of Quebec, where cloud cover may obscure smoke detection. More smoke of Russian origin is seen covering portions New England and the Mid Atlantic extending out across the Atlantic. Most of the smoke was moving off toward the east. Oregon/Northern California/Idaho/Montana... The Milepost 97 fire in Oregon remained active emitting moderate-to-thick smoke over much of southern Oregon and far northern California with slow movement towards the north-northeast earlier today then towards the east-southeast in the afternoon. The Tucker fire in northeastern California has also contributed minor amounts of smoke today. Remnant smoke from yesterday's Milepost 97 and Tucker fire smoke plume has moved east-northeastward reaching central Idaho and western Montana. DUST... Texas/Western Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche/Yucatan/Western Caribbean A fairly large of area of Saharan dust covers the majority of the western Caribbean, the Yucatan Peninsula, western Gulf of Mexico, and southeast Texas. This area of Saharan dust has been moving around an area of high pressure centered across the eastern Gulf of Mexico/southeastern CONUS. Hosley THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
