DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1602Z August 5, 2019

SMOKE:
Alaska/Canada/Northern Plains/Great Lakes...
The complex fires across Alaska and Northwestern Canada are still burning
but at a much slower rate. A large area of remnant smoke from these fires
continued moving generally eastward and extended across Alaska, Canada,
and the Great Lakes. Cloud cover across much of Alaska and portions of
central Canada may obscure smoke plumes across these areas.

Northwest US...
A region of heavy density smoke was observed moving eastward over Oregon,
NE Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and into North Dakota.

Nevada....
Several fires grouped together south of Elko, Nevada along with several
other fires in NE Nevada and NW Utah were producing moderate to heavy
smoke which was moving eastward across northern Utah, SW Wyoming, and
NW Colorado.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
