DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1825Z August 14, 2019
SMOKE: Alaska/Western and Central Canada... A large area of smoke which was believed to be mainly from the recent significant wildfire activity in Siberia could be seen over western and central Canada with some of the smoke also extending to the west and southwest off the coast of northern British Columbia toward the Gulf of Alaska. Within the large area of thin density smoke was a moderately dense to thick area which covered central Alberta and Saskatchewan. Cloud cover in the area did interfere with information on the extent of the smoke from the satellite imagery. Northern Arizona/Northwestern Nevada... Moderate to thick density smoke was seen from several wildfires burning in northern Arizona and northwestern Nevada. The smoke was generally spreading to the northeast. Southern Plains/Lower Mississippi Valley/Southeastern U.S... Fires throughout the Southern Plains, Lower Mississippi Valley, and Southeast have contributed to multiple plumes of light density smoke throughout eastern Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas. YL THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
