DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z August 24, 2019

SMOKE:
Alaska/Gulf of Alaska...
Wildfires in southwestern and south central Alaska were responsible for
areas of smoke which were visible today over much of southern Alaska
and offshore over the Gulf of Alaska. Some of the smoke over the Gulf
of Alaska was of moderate density while moderate to thick density smoke
was located closer to the actual wildfires. Cloud cover over other parts
of Alaska and northwestern Canada limited smoke detection in satellite
imagery in those areas.

Western U.S...
A number of smoke plumes were seen emanating from wildfires scattered
across many western states though larger leftover areas of smoke were not
visible with part of the reason being significant cloud cover especially
over Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico.

Northern Canada...
A swath of possible thin density leftover smoke which could be from
significant wildfire activity which had been occurring in Siberia over
the past month or so was visible over Nunavut of far northern Canada.

DUST:
Baja/Southern California...
Similar to yesterday afternoon and evening, a patch of blowing dust of
thin to moderate density originated from a source region in northern
Baja just northwest of the Gulf of California. The dust fanned out as
it spread to the north and across the Mexico-southern California border.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
