SMOKE:
Alaska/Gulf of Alaska...
The Swan Lake fire in the Kenai Peninsula is burning a large portion of
the region with latest US forest service reports of the large complex
fire being about 150,000 acres in size. The moderate to heavy density
smoke from this fire is present across most of the Kenai Peninsula and
is progressing southwestward this evening. Several other large complex
fires were observed across Southeastern and Southwestern Alaska with
moderate to heavy density smoke with Southwestern Alaska fires progressing
southward this evening.

Central Mexico/Bay of Campeche/Southern Gulf of Mexico...
Large complex fire activity was observed in Central Mexico with moderate
to heavy density smoke in the vicinity of these fires observed in latest
GOES Visible imagery over the region and progressing out over the Southern
Bay of Campeche. Light density smoke was observed further from the fire
activity across Eastern Central Mexico coastline and over the Southern
Gulf this evening.

Oregon...
The Cow fire in Central/Eastern Oregon is releasing moderate and heavy
density smoke which is progressing Southeastward towards Idaho this
evening.

Idaho...
The Cover Creek fire is releasing moderate and heavy density smoke which
is progressing eastward this evening.

Wyoming...
A wildfire in South Central Wyoming is releasing moderate density smoke
which is progressing southeastward this evening.

New Mexico...
The Triple Nickle fire in Western New Mexico is active with moderate to
heavy density smoke progressing south and east this evening.

Arizona...
Large complex fire activity was also observed in Central/North Western
Arizona with moderate to heavy density smoke progressing south and east
this evening.

Utah...
A large complex fire burning in Southern Utah is producing moderate to
heavy density smoke that is progressing eastward this evening.

Texas...
The latest GOES Visible imagery observed moderate to heavy density smoke
from two large complex fires located in Central/Southern Texas. The
smoke from these fires is progressing northward this evening.

Dust:
A region of Saharan dust was observed over most of the Eastern and

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
