DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z August 28, 2019

SMOKE:
Alaska/Gulf of Alaska/Canada/U.S....
The Swan Lake fire burning in the Kenai Peninsula has produced moderate
and heavy density smoke across most of South Central Alaska which has now
progressed southeastward with moderate and heavy density smoke observed
over the Gulf of Alaska. Large complex fires both east and west of the
Kenai Peninsula were also observed in Southern Alaska with latest GOES
Visible imagery observing moderate to heavy density smoke from these fires
progressing southward. Light density smoke was observed over the Yukon,
Northwest Territories, Alberta Province in Canada and over portions
of the Northern US likely from large complex fire activity in Southern
Alaska. The smoke is progressing south and east this evening.

Central Mexico/Bay of Campeche/Southern Gulf of Mexico...
A large quantity of fire activity was observed in Central Mexico with
heavy density smoke from the fires progressing northwestward. Moderate
to heavy density smoke was observed across most of the region as well
as over the Southern Bay of Campeche. Light density smoke was observed
over the Southern Gulf of Mexico with the smoke progressing north and
west this evening.

Oregon...
The Cow fire in eastern Oregon is continuing to produce moderate to
very heavy density smoke across most of Eastern Oregon. The smoke from
this large complex fire is progressing North and East towards Idaho
this evening.

Idaho/Northwestern Montana...
The latest GOES Visible imagery observed several fire complexes
mostly in portions of Central/Northern Idaho and one in Northwestern
Montana. Moderate to heavy density smoke was observed in the vicinity
of these fires and is progressing North and East towards Montana and
off to the east this evening.

Washington...
A large complex fire was observed burning in Southern/Central
Washington. Moderate to heavy density smoke was observed in the vicinity
of the fire and is progressing northwestward this evening.

Wyoming...
A large complex fire was observed burning is South/Central
Wyoming. Moderate to heavy density smoke was observed in the vicinity
of the large complex fire and is progressing South and East towards
Colorado this evening.

Dust:
A region of Saharan dust was observed over the Western Atlantic east
of the Bahamas and over portions of the Central Caribbean Sea as well
as over Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. The dust is progressing westward
towards Central America this evening.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
