DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0210Z August 29, 2019
SMOKE: Alaska/Gulf of Alaska/Canada/U.S.... The large complex fires burning in southwest and south central Alaska remained active and was producing moderate to heavy density smoke across most of south central Alaska. The smoke has progressed southeastward over the Gulf of Alaska. Cloud cover over other parts of Alaska and northwestern Canada limited smoke detection in those areas. Light density smoke was also observed over the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Manitoba Providence in Canada and over the Great Lakes region, likely from large complex fire activity in Southern Alaska. Northwestern U.S... Significant amount of fire activities in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana were observed from the satellite imagery. Moderate to thick density smoke was seen in the vicinity of the fires. Thinner density smoke from these fires was progressing eastward across northwestern U.S. and eventually reaching the middle Mississippi Valley and Ohio Valley. Mexico/Gulf of Mexico... Numerous seasonal fires along eastern Mexico and central Yucatan Peninsula were observed from the satellite imagery. Light density smoke covered much of the region and was stretching offshore to southwest over the Pacific and northward into the Bay of Campeche. Additional smoke could be seen originating from gas flaring activity at the Bay of Campeche with the plume dispersing towards the northwest. YL THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
