DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1650Z September 1, 2019

SMOKE:
Alaska/Canada...
Remnant smoke remains visible over central Alaska and the Yukon this
morning. Wildfires located in central Yukon continue to burn and light
density smoke stretches into the western Northwest Territories.

Central US...
A patchwork of remnant light density smoke was visible over the central
US. The full extent us unknown due to cloud coverage in the area. A fire
located in northwestern Louisiana is responsible for producing localized
medium density smoke.

Western US...
The Springs Fire located in east-central California continues to burn
producing smoke that is being carried northeastward and into central
Nevada. The 204 Cow fire in eastern Oregon is producing light density
smoke that covers eastern areas of the state.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
