DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z September 02, 2019
SMOKE: Alaska/Canada... Remnant smoke remains visible over northeast Alaska and northern Yukon and Northwest Territories. Despite a few fire locations still being active in southern Alaska and central Yukon, individual plumes could not be observed due to excess cloud coverage in the region. Central US... A large area of remnant light-density smoke was seen covering the central US, including the Great Plains (South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma) and the lower Mississippi Valley (Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana), and extending towards to northeast over Illinois, Indiana, western Tennessee and Kentucky. Several short-lived agricultural fires were detected across western Mississippi, northern Louisiana, and southeast Arkansas with individual plumes of moderate density spreading towards the southwest. Western US... Several wildfires were actively burning across the region during the afternoon and early evening hours. The Pedro Mountain fire in Carbon County/Wyoming was releasing heavy density smoke towards the east for approximately 100 miles. Wildfires in central and northern Idaho had moderate density smoke dispersing towards the northeast - these included the Shady in Custer County, Smith Knob in Idaho County, and the Shale Creek fire in Clearwater County. In Oregon, the 204 Cow Fire located along the Grant-Baker County line stood out with heavy smoke dispersing towards the northeast over Baker City and across Idaho's state border. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
