DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0220z September 07, 2019

SMOKE:

Northern California/Oregon...
The Walker Fire in northeastern California was producing a plume
consisting of heavy-density smoke extending northeastward into
northwestern Nevada, and light-density smoke extending further into
southeastern Oregon. The plumes spread ENE in the afternoon across Nevada
and Idaho. Additional fires across northern California were producing
light and moderate-density smoke largely drifting ENE. Fires across
central Oregon were producing up to heavy-density smoke, with a notable
mass of moderate smoke reaching from near the California border to the
Columbia River. The smoke was progressing ENE as well in the afternoon.

Great Plains/Southern Great Lakes/Southeastern CONUS...
A very large mass of remnant smoke originating from fires in Montana
and Wyoming, along with yesterday's agricultural fires in the southeast,
extended from eastern Montana and Colorado to western Pennsylvania, and
across portions of the southern U.S. and the northern Gulf of Mexico from
Corpus Christi, Texas, to the eastern Florida coast. The thickest smoke
in this area was drifting southeastward across Kansas and Missouri. In
addition, today's agricultural fires from east Texas and Oklahoma to
southern Georgia were seen producing numerous small plumes of light
smoke mainly moving southward.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
