DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200z September 09, 2019

SMOKE:
Northern/Central California/Western US...
The Walker fire in the Plumas National Forest in Northern California
has currently burned over 38,000 acres according to latest Incident
Web report. Heavy density smoke from this fire is progressing east
southeastward into Nevada. Light to moderate density smoke was observed
across most of Northern Nevada from this large complex fire this evening.
The Taboose fire between Invo National forest and King Canyon National
Park in East Central California is producing heavy density smoke that is
progressing southeastward. Light to moderate density smoke was observed
in Southeastern California, in the region of Las Vegas in Southern Nevada,
and in far Northwestern Arizona from the large fire this evening.

Lower Mississippi Valley/Texas/Southeastern US...
A large region of light to moderate density smoke was observed mainly
in portions of the Lower Mississippi Valley, which is likely due to
Wildfire smoke transport from the Western US and a large quantity of
agricultural burning in the region.
Heavy density smoke was observed in the vicinity of the small fire
complexes in Eastern Arkansas,Southeastern Missouri, Northwestern
Mississippi, and Northern Louisiana. The smoke from the fires in Louisiana
is progressing Northwestward, while the smoke from the fires in Eastern
Arkansas, Northwestern Mississippi, and Southeastern Missouri are
progressing northwest and northward this evening.

A complex fire was observed in the Port Aransas region in Coastal Southern
Texas. Heavy density smoke as well as moderate to light density smoke
was observed progressing northwestward inland towards Central Texas
this evening.

Southeastern Alaska and Northwestern Canada/Yukon Province...
A large complex fire was observed in Southeastern Alaska with heavy
density smoke observed in the vicinity of the fire and moderate to light
density smoke observed further from the fire. The smoke from this fire
is progressing northeastward this evening.GOES Visible imagery observed
several complex fires in Northwestern Canada Yukon Province. Heavy
density smoke was observed in the vicinity of the fires with moderate
and light density smoke further from the fire activity. The smoke from
these fires is progressing northeastward this evening.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
