DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z September 10, 2019

SMOKE:
Northern/Central California/Nevada...
The Walker fire in northeastern California was producing moderate density
smoke this morning, extending eastward into northern Nevada. Thin smoke
from this fire also extended into southern Idaho and extreme northwestern
Colorado. Thin smoke from the Taboose fire in east-central California
extended northeastward into southern Nevada.

Wyoming/South Dakota/Nebraska/Iowa/Minnesota...
A patch of leftover thin density smoke primarily associated with wildfires
burning in the Western U.S. was seen this morning over eastern Wyoming,
across southern South Dakota and northern Nebraska, and into northeastern
Iowa and southwestern Minnesota.

Eastern/Southeastern U.S...
leftover thin smoke, primarily from previous days' agricultural fires
in the southeast U.S., was observed extending from Missouri, Arkansas,
and Louisiana east to the southeast and mid-Atlantic coast. In addition,
a fire in northwestern Louisiana was producing a narrow plume of thick
smoke extending northward.

Northwestern Canada/Yukon Province...
Wildfires burning in the Yukon Province of northwestern Canada, and
likely also southeastern Alaska, were responsible for sizable areas of
thin density smoke over much of the Yukon, and the western part of the
Northwest Territories. Moderately dense smoke extended westward from
several of the Yukon fires.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
