DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z September 11, 2019

SMOKE:
Northern/Central California...
The Walker fire in northeastern California was producing moderate density
smoke this morning, but became obscured by clouds by this afternoon. Other
fires in northern and central California were seen to be producing thin
plumes of smoke, generally confined to within the borders of the state.

Southeastern U.S...
Numerous agricultural fires once again were seen producing smoke plumes
throughout the southeastern U.S. stretching from eastern Oklahoma and
Texas to North Carolina. Like yesterday, the greatest activity was along
the lower Mississippi River. Several plumes exhibited moderate-density
smoke. The general movement of the smoke plumes was toward the north,
except along the eastern Gulf Coast and the Carolinas where some westward
movement was observed.

Northwestern Canada/Yukon Territory...
Wildfires burning in the Yukon Territory of northwestern Canada were
producing large amounts of thick smoke. The full extent of the smoke
plumes and any remnant smoke was obscured by cloud cover this afternoon,
but the greatest amount and densest smoke appeared to be emanating from
a large fire or set of fires in the central portions of the Yukon.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
