DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0015Z September 13, 2019

SMOKE:
Northern Canada...
Three main forest fire clusters in central Yukon were responsible
for a large area of moderate density smoke that extends eastward for
approximately 1,000 miles impacting the northern end of Yukon, Northwest
Territories and Nunavut.

Northern California...
The Walker fire in Plumas county and the South fire in Tehama county
gained intensity during the afternoon hours releasing heavy density
smoke. Walker fire smoke extended towards the northeast over eastern
Plumas county and central-southern Lassen county, while South fire smoke
impacted southwest Tehama county and northern Glenn county.

Arizona...
Four separate fires were seen releasing moderate density smoke across
southern Coconino, Navajo and Apache counties in central Arizona. Variable
winds caused smoke plumes to stay within close range of their sources.

Central Mississippi Valley...
Several agricultural fires could be seen along eastern Arkansas and
southeast Missouri. Light-to-moderate density smoke covered much of the
region with smoke dispersing towards the northeast into southern Illinois.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
