DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z September 17, 2019
SMOKE: Middle and Lower Mississippi Valley... Numerous seasonal/agricultural type fires were detected again over portions of the Middle and Lower Mississippi Valley Region resulting in plumes of thin to moderate density smoke which primarily affected southeastern Missouri, eastern Arkansas, and northwestern Mississippi. South Central Canada... Swaths of thin to perhaps moderately dense leftover smoke attributed to the recent wildfire activity in the Western U.S. were visible across southern Manitoba and southern Ontario in south central Canada. Western U.S... Significant cloudiness over portions of the Western U.S. greatly limited both fire and smoke detection in satellite imagery. Alaska/Northwestern Canada... Extensive cloud cover across Alaska and northwestern Canada prevented smoke detection in satellite imagery despite the recent wildfire activity especially in the Yukon Province of northwestern Canada. DUST: California/Nevada... Gusty northerly winds over the interior of central California and western Nevada have likely kicked up blowing dust though only a little possible blowing dust was visible spreading to the south over the San Joaquin Valley in south central California. Otherwise, significant cloud cover limited dust detection in satellite imagery. JS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
