DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z September 23, 2019

SMOKE:
Southeastern CONUS...
Numerous agricultural burns were observed emitting mainly light to
moderate density smoke throughout the afternoon and evening. Smoke from
these fires was moving clockwise around a high pressure center over
the Appalachians.

Arizona...
The Ikes and Sheridan fires continue to burn in Arizona this afternoon
and evening, producing thick smoke. Smoke from the Ikes fire was moving
north, while the smoke from the Sheridan fire moved northeast. Another
fire in south-central Arizona also produced a thick puff of smoke that
moved north throughout the afternoon. A couple other small fires were
also producing light smoke.

Coloado...
Three fires throughout Colorado were observed producing thick smoke. The
smoke from these fires was moving generally off toward the east.

BLOWING DUST:
Southern California/Northern Baja California...
Southerly winds were observed transporting dust from the western portions
of the Reserva de la Biosfera Alto Golfo de California y Delta del Rio
Colorado across the agricultural areas near the Colorado River Delta,
Mexicali, and El Centro.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
