DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z September 26, 2019

SMOKE:
Pacific Northwest...
Widespread fire activity was observed across much of the area from
western Montana into northern California. Associated smoke plumes ranged
from light to quite thick in density. Smoke across eastern Washington,
northern Idaho, and western Montana was moving east while smoke across
Oregon and northern California was moving south to southwest.

Southern Mississippi Valley...
Agricultural burning across eastern Texas, Louisiana, southern Arkansas
and western Mississippi was producing light to moderate smoke plumes
this afternoon. These smoke plumes were generally moving off toward the
north to northeast.

Georgia...
Continued prescribed agricultural burning across eastern and southern
Georgia was observed producing mainly light smoke that moved eastward
across the state and, for one or two smoke plumes, into southern South
Carolina.

Southern Yucatan...
Significant flaring of oil rigs, combined with moderate activity across
southern Mexico, are producing a large area of light to moderately thick
smoke across the southern half of the Yucatan Peninsula. this smoke is
moving southeast.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
