DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z September 30, 2019

SMOKE:
Western Canada/Central British Columbia...
GOES Visible imagery observed several large complex fires across portions
of West Central British Columbia Province this evening. Light density
smoke from these fires are present across most of the region and has
progressed south and west out over the Eastern Pacific offshore from
the Pacific Northwest US. Moderate to heavy density smoke was observed
closer and in the vicinity of the large complex fire activity. The smoke
from these fires is continuing to progress south and west this evening.

California/Colorado...
GOES Visible imagery observed several small fires across portions of
Northern/Central California with light density smoke progressing north and
east from these fires this evening. Two small complex fires were observed
in the Central Rockies in Central Colorado with light density smoke from
one of the fires progressing northeastward and moderate to heavy density
smoke from the other fire progressing northeastward as well this evening.

Lower Mississippi Valley...
A large quantity of Agricultural burning was observed across portions
of Eastern Arkansas, Northwestern Mississippi, and Southeastern
Missouri. Moderate density smoke was observed across portions of Eastern
Arkansas and Northwestern Mississippi. Light density smoke was observed
throughout most of the region progressing northward this evening.

Southeast US...
Light density smoke was observed across portions of North Carolina, South
Carolina, and Eastern Georgia. The light density smoke is progressing
slowly southwestward this evening.

Bahamas/Grand Bahama Island...
GOES Visible imagery continues to observed small fire complex activity
across the southern coastline of Grand Bahama Island in the Bahamas
just east of the Freeport region. Moderate to heavy density smoke was
observed closer and in the vicinity of the fire. Light density smoke
was observed further from the fire progressing southwestward towards
southeastern Florida this evening.

Southwestern US Dust:
A region of blowing dust was observed with GOES Visible imagery over
portions of Northern Arizona and Southern/Eastern Utah. The dust is
progressing northeastward this evening.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
