DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z October 6, 2019

SMOKE:
Central U.S./South Central U.S./Southeastern U.S...
A large quantity of agricultural burning was observed again across most
of Eastern Arkansas and Southeastern Missouri where moderate density
smoke was observed away from the fires in this region and heavy density
smoke was observed in the vicinity of these agricultural fires. Moderate
density smoke was also observed across portions of Southeastern Texas and
Southern Louisiana where small complex fire activity was observed with
smoke progressing north and west in this region. A large region of light
density smoke was observed across most of the Lower and Mid Mississippi
Valley and across portions of the Southeast as well. The smoke from
the high amount of agricultural burning is progressing northeastward
this evening.

British Columbia Province/Western Canada...
GOES Visible imagery observed large seasonal complex fires across portions
of West Central British Columbia Province. Moderate to heavy density
smoke was observed closer and in the vicinity of the fire activity. Light
density smoke despite some cloud cover in the region was observed across
most of Central British Columbia Province. The smoke from these fires
are progressing northeastward this evening.

Western US/Arizona/California/Colorado/Utah...
GOES Visible imagery observed large complex fire activity across Northern
California where light, moderate, and heavy density smoke is progressing
eastward from this fire into Western Nevada. A large complex fire in
Central California was observed with light, moderate, and heavy density
smoke is progressing southeastward this evening. Complex fire activity
in Northeastern Utah observed light, moderate, and heavy density smoke
progressing southeastward. Two large complex fires with one in Western
Colorado and another in South Central Colorado observed light, moderate,
and heavy density smoke progressing north and eastward. Three large
complex fires across portions of Northern and East Central Arizona
observed light, moderate, and heavy density smoke from these fires
progressing northeastward this evening.

Southern Florida...
A small region of agricultural fires was observed near and south of Lake
Okeechobee across interior South Florida. Light density smoke was mainly
observed and the smoke from these agricultural fires is progressing
westward this evening.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
