DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1550Z October 11, 2019

SMOKE:
Canada...
Seasonal fire activity in the northwestern US and British Columbia
remains responsible for a blanket of light density remnant smoke that
covers central British Columbia, the southern portion of the Northwestern
Territories, most of Alberta and Saskatchewan, and portions of northern
Manitoba this morning. Heavy cloud cover in eastern Canada does not
allow for the full extent of smoke to be seen.

California...
Two large complex fires were observed in east central California
emitting light to moderately dense smoke which was generally moving
to the west. Localized Heavy smoke was also detected. The Reche Fire
in southern California is also producing light to heavy smoke that is
being carried westward, over the coast, before combining with other
smoke signatures from fires in the state.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
