DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z October 12, 2019
SMOKE: Southwestern Canada/Northwestern U.S... Seasonal fire activity in the northwestern U.S. and British Columbia remains responsible for a blanket of light density remnant smoke that covers central British Columbia, the southern portion of the Northwestern Territories, most of Alberta and Saskatchewan, and portions of northern Manitoba. Heavy cloud cover in eastern Canada does not allow for the full extent of smoke to be seen. Scattered wildfires were also observed across the northwestern U.S. Moderate density smoke was seen in the vicinity of the fires and light density smoke was observed throughout the region. California... Two large complex fires were observed in east central California emitting light to moderately dense smoke which was generally moving to the west. Localized Heavy smoke was also detected. The Reche Fire in southern California is also producing moderate to heavy smoke that is being carried westward, over the coast, before combining with other smoke signatures from fires in the state. Eastern U.S./Mid Atlantic... Leftover thin smoke, primary from previous days' agricultural fires in the southeastern U.S., was observed extending from North Carolina and South Carolina to the mid Atlantic coast. YL THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
