DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0010Z October 13, 2019

SMOKE:
Southwestern Canada/Northwestern U.S...
Seasonal fire activity in the northwestern U.S. and British Columbia
continue but smoke was not visible due to cloud coverage. Scattered
wildfires were also observed across the northwestern U.S.

California...
The Caples fire in Eldorado County/Northern California was actively
burning this afternoon and early evening hours with moderate-density smoke
dispersing towards the east and across the Nevada state border. Remnant
smoke from that fire covered much of the Sacramento Valley and the
northern San Joaquin Valley. The Saddleridge fire in Ventura county
showed reduced activity today with light-density smoke covering the
southern part of the county and extending westward over the Pacific
ocean across the Santa Monica basin.

Lower Mississippi...
Several agricultural fires could be seen along the lower Mississippi
Valley, and to the west over eastern Texas and Oklahoma. Light-density
smoke plumes were visible along central and northeastern Louisiana and
southeastern Arkansas, with low-level winds pushing the smoke towards
the south-southwest.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
