DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z October 21, 2019
SMOKE: Middle and Lower Mississippi Valley... More seasonal/agricultural type fire activity was detected in southeastern Missouri, eastern Arkansas, and south central Louisiana resulting in emissions of thin to locally moderately dense smoke though the extent of the visible smoke was not as prevalent today than in previous days in part due to some cloud cover in these locations. Arizona... A few fires again were detected in central Arizona with an area of moderately dense to locally thick smoke emanating from a fire to the west of Show Low in east central Arizona. The smoke thinned out as it spread to the southwest reaching the New Mexico border just before sunset. North Central California... Seasonal/agricultural fire activity in the Sacramento Valley between Chico and Sacramento produced a number of thin to locally moderately dense smoke plumes which moved in a southeasterly direction with smoke merging into a larger patch of smoke. The thinner density leading edge of some of this smoke moved over Sacramento just before sunset. DUST: Southeastern New Mexico/Western Texas... Swaths of thin density blowing dust originated from sources over southeastern New Mexico and Western Texas and spread eastward over western and northwestern Texas affecting the area roughly from west of Midland to southwest of Wichita Falls. JS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
