DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2300Z October 27, 2019

SMOKE:
Northern California...
The Kincade Fire north of San Francisco continued to burn and produce
moderate to thick density smoke which moved primarily to the south this
afternoon/evening. A much larger mass of thin to moderately dense smoke
associated with this fire covered a good portion of northern and central
California and extended well offshore to the west and southwest.

Southern California/Baja...
Wildfires observed in Northern Baja Mexico continue to produce moderate
to dense smoke now moving E/SE. Residual light to moderately dense smoke
from the Kincade Fire and smoke from fires in northwest Baja extends
well offshore into the Pacific and is currently moving E/SE.

Utah/Arizona:
Several fires across east central Arizona and central Utah produced
moderately dense smoke moving E-ENE in satellite imagery.  Lighter smoke
from these fires extend a little far E.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
