DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0140Z November 6, 2019

SMOKE:
Utah...
Several fires in south central Utah were producing light to moderate
density smoke which moved off to the southeast. There was also a light
density remnant smoke plume from the same fires moving southeast across
the NW corner of New Mexico.

Arizona/New Mexico...
Two bursts of moderate to heavy smoke plumes were seen emitting from
fires in north central Arizona. Also a cluster of fires in east central
Arizona was responsible for an area of mostly thin density smoke which
moved to the northeast and across the border into west central New Mexico.

North Central California...
A persistent fire in western Tehama County of northern California was
emitting a light to moderately dense smoke plume moved towards the south
in the general direction of the Oakland-San Francisco metro areas.

South Central and Southeastern U.S...
Numerous seasonal type fires were scattered around portions of the South
Central and Southeastern U.S. with some visible smoke moving towards
the south. Areas of cloud cover inhibited smoke detection from satellite
imagery in a few locations within that region.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
