DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z November 16, 2019

SMOKE:
Northern and Central California...
Numerous seasonal/agricultural type fires in the Sacramento Valley and
San Joaquin Valley resulted in many thin to locally moderately dense
smoke plumes which quickly moved off to the south and southeast. Some
of the plumes merged to form larger areas of thin density smoke within
these valleys.

South Central U.S...
Widespread seasonal/agricultural type fire activity was noted scattered
across portions of the Central and South Central U.S. during the day
along with a number of visible smoke plumes. The most significant smoke
was seen with the fires across south central Louisiana where many smoke
plumes of thin density were observed spreading to the south with some
of the plumes merging to form larger patches of thin density smoke.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
