DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z November 29, 2019

SMOKE:
Florida and the Bahamas...
Scattered fires throughout the agricultural area around Lake Okeechobee
and a few throughout the Bahamas were producing light smoke plumes that
moved off mainly toward the south.

British Columbia, Alberta, and the Pacific northwest...
Many fires were noted across southwestern Canada and the Pacific
Northwest. Light to very light smoke was noted emanating from a handful
of fires, with smoke moving westward off the Pacific coast across
southwestern BC and Victoria Island.

Southeastern CONUS...
Fires with smoke plumes were observed from Louisiana to South
Carolina. Much of the smoke was light, with one or two producing denser
smoke. Smoke over Louisiana was moving west, while smoke across Georgia
and South Carolina was moving south-southeast.

Elsewhere...
Cloud cover across much of the western and central CONUS was covered
by clouds. This likely is obscuring at least some fire activity and
smoke emission.

BLOWING DUST
Central Mexico...
In the Mexican states of Guanajuato, Michoacan, and Queretaro, blowing
dust was observed. The dust was being blown off towards the northeast.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
