DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z January 10, 2020
SMOKE: Southeastern U.S... Significant seasonal fire activity occurred again today over the Southeastern U.S. though increasing cloud cover during the day limited smoke detection in satellite imagery. Some mainly thin density smoke plumes were still seen especially over South Carolina, eastern Georgia, southern Alabama, and northern Florida including the panhandle. Mexico/Central America... Seasonal fire activity was also detected scattered across portions of Mexico and northern Central America. A cluster of fires in northern Sonora of northwestern Mexico produced moderate to even locally thick density smoke plumes which merged and thinned out as they spread to the northeast reaching south central Arizona by late in the day. More fires in northern and central Chihuahua of northern Mexico emitted primarily thin density smoke which spread quickly to the northeast. Additional patches of thin density smoke were also visible with fires in central and southern Mexico. Bay of Campeche... Generally thin density smoke from the oil rigs in the Bay of Campeche spread to the west and northwest during the day. DUST: Northern Chihuahua/Western Texas... An area of thin to locally moderate density blowing dust originated from a favorable source region in northern Chihuahua of northern Mexico and moved off to the east and northeast across the Texas border just south and east of El Paso. JS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
