DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z January 15, 2020

SMOKE…
Cuba…
Fire activity was noted throughout the island of Cuba. The smoke from
these fires was observed moving west or west-northwest.

Southern Plains…
A handful of fires across Oklahoma and Texas were observed emitting smoke
this afternoon. The smoke from the majority of these fires was moving
north to north-northwest, with the exception of a fire in southwest
Oklahoma, where the smoke was moving north-northeast.

Central Mexico…
Similar to yesterday, widespread fire activity was observed from western
Jalisco into central Veracruz. Smoke from these fires was generally
moving north, although smoke from a fire in western Jalisco was moving
off towards the southeast.

Northern Mexico…
Similar to yesterday, fairly dense areas of fire activity across northern
Sonora and northern Chihuahua were producing smoke plumes that were
moving off towards the east-northeast.

BLOWING DUST…
Clark County, NV into NW San Bernardino County, CA…
Two areas of blowing dust was observed emanating from Ivanpah Dry Lake,
which extends north and south of the community of Primm, Nevada. The
dust was moving off toward the east-northeast. Another area of blowing
dust was also observed moving north-northeast from the dry lake bed of
Searles Lake in far northwest San Bernardino County.

TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
