DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z January 25, 2020

SMOKE:
Southeast US/Southern Plains...
Small complex fire activity and agricultural burning was observed
across portions of Southern/Central Florida and also in portions of
Northwestern Florida and Southern Georgia. Small complex fire activity
was also observed in Southern/Eastern Texas but increasing cloud cover
made smoke analysis difficult in this region. Light density smoke was
observed from the fire activity progressing Southeastward this morning.

Southern Mexico/Southern Guatemala…
Fire activity was observed across portions of Southern Mexico and
especially in Southern Guatemala. Light density smoke was observed from
isolated fire activity in Southern Mexico progressing Northwestward this
morning. Moderate and heavy density smoke was observed in the vicinity of
fires burning across portions of Southern Guatemala with light density
smoke further from the fire activity. The smoke from these fires is
progressing Northwestward this morning.

Cuba...
Small complex fire activity was observed across portions of mainland
Cuba with moderate to heavy density smoke closer to the fires and light
density smoke further from the fires progressing Southwestward this
morning. A large complex fire was observed on Isla de la Juventud with
moderate to heavy density smoke as well as light density smoke progressing
Southwestward out over the Northern Caribbean Sea this morning.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
