DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z January 29, 2020

SMOKE:
Southeast US/Southern Georgia and South Florida...
Small complex fire activity as well as agricultural burning was observed
over portions of Southern Georgia and South Florida. The smoke from
fire activity in Southern Georgia was not seen due to cloud cover from
a weather system progressing through the region. Light density smoke
and some moderate density smoke was observed with agricultural burning
activity in the Lake Okeechobee region of South Florida with the smoke
progressing northwestward this morning.

Southern Texas...
Two small complex fires were observed in South Texas with a smaller fire
just west of Alice, Texas and another larger fire located on North Padre
Island, Texas. Moderate to heavy density smoke was observed closer to
the fire activity and light density smoke was observed further from
the fires. The smoke from these fires is progressing southeastward
this morning.

Southern Mexico/Guatemala...
A region of light density smoke was observed over portions of Southern
Mexico and Guatemala this morning.

Southern Cuba...
Two small complex fires were observed in Southern Cuba with moderate
to heavy density smoke in the vicinity of the fires and light density
smoke further from the fires. The smoke from these fires is progressing
eastward this morning.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
