DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z February 5, 2020
SMOKE: Southeastern U.S… Numerous smoke plumes of mainly thin density were visible especially across central and southern Florida during the day with the smoke generally moving off to the north and northeast. Quite a few fires were detected farther to the north over northern Florida, southern Georgia, and the southern and eastern portion of the Carolinas though only a few smoke plumes were seen due to enough cloudiness moving over the region. Central California… Numerous seasonal/agricultural type fires were detected in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valley regions along with a few thin density smoke plumes. Cuba… More seasonal type fire activity was present across Cuba resulting in many smoke plumes of thin density. DUST: California/Nevada/Northern Baja… Similar to yesterday, areas of primarily thin density blowing dust originated from a number of sources in west central and southern Nevada and over southeastern California and moved quickly to the south. More dust was seen over northern Baja moving southward over the northern part of the Gulf of California. JS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
