DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z February 14, 2020

SMOKE:
Cuba/Florida…
Fire activity across Cuba and Florida was producing light to moderate
density smoke this afternoon. Smoke is mainly light aside from two fire
complexes in central Florida. Also of note is a light smoke plume that
extended from northern Cuba into southwestern Florida near Sarasota. The
smoke from fires in Cuba was mainly moving north (aside from those fires
over southeastern Cuba) and the smoke from fires in Florida was moving
off to the east-northeast.

Texas/Gulf of Mexico/Tamaulipas…
Numerous smoke producing fires were noted mainly across southern Texas but
with a few across central and northern Texas. Light to moderate density
smoke plumes were seen extending south from these fires across southern
and coastal Texas extending into the Mexican state of Tamaulipas and
into the western Gulf of Mexico.

Northern California/Southern Oregon…
Scattered to widespread fire activity producing light to moderate
density smoke was noted this afternoon. Much of the smoke was moving
northeastward, with smoke in the Sacramento Valley moving north and
accumulating along the rim of the valley.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
