DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z February 25, 2020

SMOKE:
Hawaii…
Thin to locally moderately dense smoke continued to be observed spreading
to the southwest and offshore from the large fire in the western portion
of Kaho’olawe Island. The larger area of remnant smoke from this fire
could be seen farther to the west and south west over the Pacific to
the south of the Hawaiian Island chain.

Florida…
A number of varying density smoke plumes were seen over the Florida
peninsula moving generally to the northeast. Patchy cloudiness over the
state though did interfere with additional smoke detection.

Eastern Mexico/Southern Texas/Western Gulf of Mexico…
Agricultural burning and gas flaring activities in throughout the Mexican
states of Veracruz and Tabasco were emitting smoke with a sizable area
of visible thin density smoke across far eastern Mexico and over the
western Gulf of Mexico. A separate ribbon of emissions from the oil rigs
in the Bay of Campeche could be seen moving off to the north-northwest.

DUST:
Eastern New Mexico/Western Texas…
Narrow swaths of thin density blowing dust originated from several spots
in eastern New Mexico and western Texas and quickly spread to the east
generally in the area between Lubbock and Midland.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
