DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z March 8, 2020

SMOKE:
Central and South Central US/Southern Canada...
GOES17 West visible imagery this morning observed a large region of
light density smoke associated with widespread seasonal fire activity
present in Eastern Oklahoma, Western Arkansas, Southeast Kansas, and
Western Missouri. Light density smoke was observed over most of the
Lower Midwest including Missouri, Iowa, and Western Illinois and the
Upper Midwest including Eastern Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northern Michigan,
and over Southern Ontario Province. Moderate and Heavy density smoke
was observed as well mainly over portions of Northern Missouri, Eastern
Iowa, far Western Illinois, and far Southwestern Wisconsin. Smoke
analysis over the Southern Plains was difficult due to cloud cover
from a weather system progressing into the region. The smoke from the
widespread seasonal fire activity is continuing to progress Northward
and Northeastward this morning.

Southeastern US...
GOES16 Visible imagery observed isolated to scattered seasonal fire
activity with mainly light density smoke seen from these fires in the
Southeastern US this morning.

Southern Mexico/ Western Yucatan Peninsula...
GOES16 East Visible imagery observed isolated to scattered seasonal
fire activity across portions of Southern Mexico as well as the Western
Yucatan Peninsula. Light density smoke was mainly observed with some of
the fires producing moderate to heavy density smoke in the vicinity of
the fires this morning.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
