DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z March 9, 2020

SMOKE:
Great Lakes Region…
The large leftover mass of smoke from yesterday’s round of seasonal
burning over the Central and South Central U.S. which was seen this
morning in the area extending northeastward from Oklahoma and Arkansas
to the Great Lakes Region had diminished early this evening to a patch of
thin density smoke over northern Illinois, northern Indiana, southeastern
Wisconsin, and western and northern lower Michigan.

Central/South Central/Southeast/Mid-Atlantic Region…
Scattered controlled and agricultural type fires were detected across a
very broad area of the Central, South Central, and Southeastern U.S. along
with the Mid-Atlantic Region. Widely scattered smoke plumes were present
in much of this region with the most concentrated smoke visible over the
Florida panhandle, Alabama, the northern half of Arkansas, and southern
Illinois. In these areas, numerous smoke plumes of varying density were
present with some merging to form larger batches of smoke. Cloudiness
spread across Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, and western Missouri which
did limit smoke detection in satellite imagery to some extent.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
