THROUGH 0200Z March 22, 2020

SMOKE:
Pacific Northwest/Northern California/Southern British Columbia...
Isolated fire activity was observed in GOES17 West Visible imagery. Light
density smoke was observed from fire activity in Southeastern Washington
Columbia county progressing Northeastward. Small fire activity was
observed with a small fire complex in Lincoln County,Oregon and another
in Douglas County,Oregon where the smoke is moderate to thick closer to
the fire. The smoke from the fire activity is progressing Southeastward. A
small complex fire in Northern California in Glenn County,California was
observed with light to moderate density smoke progressing Northwestward
this evening. A small complex fire in Southern British Columbia was
observed producing moderate to thick smoke progressing Southward this
evening.

Central Plains/Eastern Kansas...
Widespread agricultural burning was observed over Eastern Kansas as well
as portions Southern Iowa, Northern/Western Missouri, Northern Arkansas,
far Southeastern Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Light density smoke was observed
from the fire activity and moderate to thick density smoke was observed
in the vicinity of a large agricultural fire in Eastern Kansas. The
smoke from the fire activity is progressing Northward this evening.

Southeastern US...
Agricultural burning was observed over portions of Southern Georgia, South
Carolina, and Northwestern Florida with light density smoke progressing
Northeastward. Moderate to thick density smoke was observed from a fire
in Chesterfield County,South Carolina progressing Eastward. Agricultural
burning South of Lake Okeechobee in South Florida was observed with
light to moderate density smoke progressing Northwestward this evening.

Cuba...
Large regions of light to moderate density smoke was observed South and
Northwest of Cuba from widespread fire activity. Moderate/thick density
smoke was observed from fire activity in Cuba with smoke progressing
mainly Westward this evening.

Southern Mexico/Central America/Southwestern Gulf of Mexico...
Widespread fire activity was observed in Southern Mexico and Central
America. Large regions of light density smoke were observed over the
Eastern Pacific South of Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Southern Guatemala as

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
