DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z March 25, 2020

SMOKE:
Plains…
Agricultural burning from Texas into Iowa and Nebraska was
observed emitting varying density smoke that was moving in different
directions. Smoke was moving towards the east-southeast across Nebraska,
western Kansas, and western Oklahoma...while smoke was moving south across
central Oklahoma and smoke was moving north across north Texas, central
Kansas and Iowa. The most dense smoke was across south-central Nebraska.

Florida and the Bahamas…
Agricultural burning across southern Florida, plus some burning on the
Bahamas, was producing light to moderate smoke that was mainly moving
off toward the northeast

Cuba…
Widespread fire activity throughout the entire island of Cuba was
producing vast quantities of smoke this afternoon. The smoke, which
is varying in density, was blanketing nearly the entirety of the
island. Smoke on the south side of the island was moving west-southwest
while smoke on the north side was moving off toward the north-northeast.

Mexico…
Fire activity, a mixture of agricultural and gas flaring, was noted
throughout much of the Yucatan and southern Mexico with much of this
activity producing varying density smoke. Much of the smoke across
the Yucatan and the Bay of Campeche coast was moving off toward the
northwest, while smoke elsewhere was moving in various directions. The
thickest smoke was across the Mexican states of Puebla and Tabasco with
a possible PyroCB in the northern Yucatan as the sun was setting

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
