DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z April 01, 2020

SMOKE:
Central Plains/Mid-Mississippi Valley…
Increasing fire activity through the morning and early afternoon from
Oklahoma and eastern Kansas to Illinois has so far produced only a few
visible smoke plumes. Cloud cover moving eastward across the area has
hampered detection of smoke for many of these fires. A large area of
remnant smoke of up to moderate thickness was moving eastward over parts
of Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri.

Southeast U.S.…
Fires in southern Alabama and Georgia and the Florida Panhandle were
producing plumes of smoke moving generally southward. Of these, a fire
in Escambia County, Alabama, was producing thick smoke and a fire in
Baldwin County, Alabama, was producing moderate smoke.

Mexico/Southern Gulf of Mexico…
Several fires in central Mexico were observed producing plumes of mainly
light smoke, with the exception of a fire in the western portion of
the state of Guerrero, which was producing moderate-density smoke. In
addition, remnant smoke was observed over the Bay of Campeche and southern
Gulf of Mexico to the west and north of the Yucatan Peninsula.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
