DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z April 8, 2020

SMOKE:
Central Plains...
Agricultural burning was observed over portions of Eastern Kansas. Light
density smoke was observed over portions of Eastern Kansas into Central
Missouri. The smoke from the agricultural fires is progressing Eastward
this afternoon.

South Florida...
Agricultural burning was observed around the Lake Okeechobee region of
South Florida with light density smoke observed from these fires. The
smoke from these fires is progressing Eastward this afternoon.

Cuba...
Seasonal fire activity was observed across most of Cuba with light
density smoke observed from the fires this morning and afternoon.

Southern Mexico/Honduras/Western Gulf of Mexico
A large region of light to moderate density smoke was observed this
morning and afternoon over most of the Western and Southwestern Gulf
of Mexico from smoke transport from widespread seasonal fire activity
from Mexico. Light to moderate density smoke was observed as well over
portions of the Western Yucatan Peninsula and Southern Mexico. Moderate
to thick density smoke was observed closer to fire activity in Southern
Mexico. Moderate to thick density smoke was also observed from fire
activity in Honduras this morning and afternoon.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
