DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0400Z April 10, 2020

SMOKE:
Nebraska/Kansas/Oklahoma...
Numerous agricultural burns especially over eastern Kansas and
northeastern Oklahoma are producing light density plumes generally
moving to the south-southeast. Clouds are likely obscuring some of the
plumes.

Cuba...
A light density plume covers most of the country and immediate areas
to the south from ongoing agricultural burning.

Mexico...
A very large light density plume covers much of the central and eastern
part of the country sourced from widespread agricultural fires in the
region. This same plume also has spread over a large part of the Gulf
of Mexico into southern Florida. A number of moderate density plumes
are embedded in the light density plume mainly near coastal sections
of the Bay of Campeche from the Texas border to the Yucatan.

Honduras...
Concentrated fires in the center of country are producing moderate to
heavy plumes that are spreading off to the west-northwest.

DUST:
Utah/Idaho...
An area of dust associated with an apparent large outflow boundary
was detected near sunset local time spreading northward over northern
Utah into southern Idaho.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
