DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z April 12, 2020

SMOKE:
Southern Mexico/Guatemala/Honduras/Gulf of Mexico...
Widespread fire activity dominates southern Mexico and the Yucatan
Peninsula, extending southward over Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. The
bulk of the fire emissions is being transported towards the northwest. A
very large area of light-to-moderate density smoke covers much of the
Yucatan Peninsula and southern Mexico, and the western and central Gulf
of Mexico where it becomes mostly stagnant. Additional areas of moderate
density smoke are seen over central Honduras.

Georgia...
Multiple prescribed fires could be observed across the state, with
highest concentration on the western side. Light-density smoke plumes
were dispersing towards the north.

Cuba...
Seasonal fire activity remains extremely high all across the
island. Light-to-moderate smoke plumes were seen dispersing towards the
west covering much of the western shoreline and extending over water
for approximately 350 miles.

Oklahoma/Kansas...
Numerous agricultural fires were actively burning across eastern Oklahoma
and Kansas. Scattered light-density smoke plumes were being transported
towards the northeast and into northwestern Missouri and southwestern
Iowa.

DUST:
Washington...
Blowing dust was observed off of southeastern Grant County traveling
towards the south over Adams, Franklin and Walla Wally counties.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
