DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z April 20, 2020

SMOKE:
Central U.S…
Seasonal fire activity was prominent across portions of the Central
U.S. especially from northern Oklahoma into eastern/central Kansas. Less
seasonal fires were seen northward across eastern Nebraska, eastern
South Dakota, southern Minnesota, and Iowa like yesterday due to cloud
cover. A number of smoke plumes and areas of primarily thin density
smoke were visible in eastern Kansas where there was less cloud coverage.

Texas:
A large fire burning in south central Texas was seen emitting moderately
dense to dense smoke moving east. The smoke stretched around 100 miles
from source.

Southern Texas/Gulf Coast Region/Gulf of Mexico/Mexico/Central
America/Cuba…
A large amount of smoke was seen coming from the tremendous amount
of seasonal burning occurring in portions of Mexico and Central
America. Smoke was present covering the southern and southeastern part
of Mexico, Central America, much of the southern/central Gulf of Mexico,
and across the fringes of the Gulf Coast region from southern Texas to
Eastern Gulf of Mexico. Higher density smoke was seen over Honduras,
Guatemala, southeastern Mexico including the Yucatan Peninsula, and the
Bay of Campeche and southwestern Gulf of Mexico. Additional areas of
smoke were visible from seasonal fires in Cuba.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
