DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z April 23, 2020

SMOKE:
Northern Plains...
Several light density plumes are found across western Minnesota, eastern
North/South Dakota, and central Nebraska. A couple of moderate density
plumes embedded in the light density plumes are over northwestern
Minnesota. Plume movement is irregular over eastern North Dakota and
northwestern Minnesota with movement to the south-southeast over eastern
South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota, and more southward over central
Nebraska.

Cuba...
Several light density plumes are moving to the east-northeast along
the north-central and northeastern coast of the country, while a couple
of light density plumes are spreading east-southeast along the
southeastern coast.

Mexico/Central America...
Extensive agricultural burning continues over the area with a large
light density plume covering Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, far
southeastern Mexico, the Bay of Campeche, and southeastern Texas. A
moderate density plume covers a large part of the Bay of Campeche with
a heavy density plume over far southeastern Mexico, Guatemala, and
Honduras. All of these plumes are moving westward initially from their
source fires and turn more northwest once at the Bay of Campeche.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
