DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0330Z April 24, 2020

SMOKE:
Minnesota/Manitoba...
Several small light density plumes are spreading south and southeast from
fires over far northwestern Minnesota and far southeastern Manitoba.

Nebraska...
A large fire near the town of Brady is generating a large light density
plume that is moving off to the east-southeast. Smaller moderate and
heavy plumes are embedded in the light density plume.

Kansas...
Light density plumes partially obscured by cloudiness are found moving
eastward from numerous small fires over the eastern part of the state.

Texas...
A large wildfire between Ozona and Pandale continues to produce a
relatively large light and smaller moderate density plumes which are
spreading off to the east.

Cuba...
Several light density plumes, mainly over the central and western part of
the country, are moving north-northwestward.

Gulf of Mexico/Mexico/Central America…
Many agricultural burns continue to produce large plumes. A light density
plume covers most of the Gulf of Mexico, central Florida, the Bay of
Campeche, far southeastern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. A
moderate density plume covers Belize, the Yucatan, and parts of Guatemala/
Honduras. A heavy density plume from more concentrated fires is over
northern Honduras.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
