DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z April 24, 2020

SMOKE:
Gulf of Mexico/Mexico/Central America…
A large area of smoke from the ongoing significant seasonal fire activity
occurring in Mexico and Central America was visible across the central,
eastern, and southeastern portions of Mexico and much of Central
America. The smoke also extended to the north over the Bay of Campeche
and the southern and eastern Gulf of Mexico. Cloud cover over Florida
prevented the determination if smoke also extended over the state. The
smoke also was visible south of Mexico and Central America over the
nearby Pacific. The Thickest smoke within this area was located over
southeastern Mexico including the Yucatan Peninsula, Central America,
and over the Bay of Campeche and south central Gulf of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
